From coquina houses to today's tile floors
St. Augustine's historic town plan is the earliest surviving example of a European planned community laid out as a 16th-century Spanish colonial town. When it became a National Historic Landmark District in 1986, about 30 colonial-era houses were still standing, almost all of them built from coquina, a native stone.
Porcelain and ceramic tile bring a hard-surface floor to a home of any age, and choosing between them comes down to a few details.

Porcelain, ceramic and the finish on top
By industry standard, porcelain is impervious tile, and tile that isn't porcelain absorbs more water. Some tile sold as porcelain does not meet the standard, while tile carrying the Porcelain Tile Certification Agency (PTCA) mark has been certified as true porcelain.
Porcelain is sold glazed or unglazed. Glazed is usually a little easier to clean, while unglazed may offer better slip resistance, and because its color runs all the way through, some people call unglazed porcelain through body.
Ceramic tile that isn't porcelain is generally easier to bond and to cut. Porcelain is harder on both counts, which matters to the installer more than to you, as long as the right setting materials go into the job.
Giving tile room to move, with our warranty behind it
Tile needs space to expand and contract, so every installation should build it in. In a small room, a gap around the edges is enough, often hidden under baseboard or shoe molding; larger floors need movement joints you can see. Tile set in thinset follows the plane of the floor beneath it, because thinset is not meant to level or flatten a surface.
A team leader supervises each job and keeps it inside the manufacturer's warranty guidelines. Our warranty on the installation is 2 years for material and 2 years for labor if the tile comes from us and we set it, or 1 year for material and 1 year for labor, counted from the installation date, if you provide the tile.

Three ways to get tile from us
Tile can come from us with installation included, or from another seller with us doing the setting. You can also buy tile from us and set it yourself or with your own crew. Estimates and in-home measures cost nothing, and the Jacksonville showroom at 7949 Atlantic Blvd, Suite 106, is open by appointment.
How a Tile Flooring Job Runs
No surprises and no pressure. Here is exactly what happens, in the order it happens.
Free in-home estimate
We come out, measure the actual rooms, and look at what is under your current floor. Measuring off a floor plan is how jobs end up short on material.
Moisture and subfloor check
We test the slab or subfloor for moisture and check it for flatness before anything is ordered. In this climate that reading decides which products are safe to install.
Written estimate
You get the material, the labor, the removal and haul-away, and the prep work itemized — so you can see what you are paying for and compare it honestly.
